La carcassa està fabricada en plàstic ABS resistent d'alt impacte amb pins metàl·lics interns niquelats. Les seves dimensions estàndard són 55 mm x 43 mm x 10 mm i el pes aproximat és de 20 grams. A la caixa s'hi inclou una memory card nova i, tret que sigui un pack promocional, normalment no s'hi afegeixen manuals ni accessoris.

No cal cap configuració especial. Simplement inseriu la targeta en una ranura de memòria de la PS2 amb la consola apagada, i es reconeixerà automàticament en encendre el sistema. Es recomana formatar-la des del menú del sistema si es detecten errors o incompatibilitats.

Les memory cards originals de Sony solen tenir una velocitat d'escriptura/lectura lleugerament superior i una vida útil comprovada més gran. Les targetes genèriques compleixen la funció bàsica, però algunes poden presentar incompatibilitats esporàdiques o menys resistència davant cicles repetits d'esborrat/escriptura. No se'n recomana l'ús per a homebrew o per al maneig intensiu de dades crítiques.
