El material principal és alumini, generalment amb un gruix típic entre 0,05 mm i 0,08 mm, amb suport autoadhesiu resistent. El gruix proporciona bona resistència a la temperatura i a l’esquinçament, tot i que en usos mecànics o abrasius extrems pot degradar-se més ràpidament que alternatives més gruixudes.

La cinta es pot adherir sobre superfícies metàl·liques, plàstiques, vidre i algunes fustes llises. Tanmateix, la màxima adherència i rendiment tèrmic s’obté sobre metalls nets i sense greix. En plàstics delicats, és recomanable fer una prova prèvia.

La cinta d’alumini sol tolerar temperatures contínues des de -20 °C fins a 120 °C, i pics breus de fins a 150 °C, depenent de l’adhesiu. A temperatures superiors, pot disminuir el poder d’adhesió o deteriorar-se.

En general, aquestes cintes compleixen estàndards bàsics de materials industrials (ROHS, REACH pel contingut de substàncies), però normalment no disposen de certificacions específiques ignífugues o per a ús alimentari, tret que s’indiqui expressament.
